Overview

The Ultrafiltration (UF) System is designed to remove suspended solids, colloids, oil traces, and microorganisms from water, providing a stable and reliable barrier filtration stage in Oil & Gas water treatment applications.
The system ensures consistent water quality, protects downstream treatment units, and supports reuse, desalination, or discharge requirements.

System Scope

Ultrafiltration Systems are engineered as fully integrated packages and typically include the following main components:

  • UF membrane modules and housings
  • Feed and recirculation pumps
  • Pre-screening or pre-filtration units (when required)
  • Backwash and relaxation systems
  • Chemical Enhanced Backwash (CEB) system
  • Clean-In-Place (CIP) system
  • Permeate and reject handling lines

Subsystems

UF Membrane Modules and Housings

Engineering of UF membrane modules and housings to provide effective removal of suspended solids, colloids, oil traces, and microorganisms, ensuring consistent permeate quality.

Engineering of feed and recirculation pumps to maintain stable flow, transmembrane pressure, and system performance under varying operating conditions.

Engineering of pre-screening or pre-filtration units to protect UF membranes from large particles and debris, reducing fouling risk.

Engineering of hydraulic backwash, relaxation, and air scour systems to control fouling, restore membrane permeability, and ensure continuous operation.

Engineering of CEB systems for periodic chemical cleaning to remove organic, inorganic, and biological fouling from UF membranes.

Engineering of CIP facilities to perform full chemical cleaning cycles, restoring long-term membrane performance.

Engineering of permeate and reject lines, valves, and routing philosophy to ensure stable recovery and proper interface with downstream systems.

Engineering Approach

The engineering of ultrafiltration systems follows an integrated and performance-driven design approach, focused on membrane protection, operational stability, and water quality consistency. Engineering activities begin with the definition of the design basis, including feed water characteristics, suspended solids load, oil content, flow rate, temperature, and required permeate quality.
This approach ensures stable operation, effective fouling control, and long-term membrane performance.

System Integration

Ultrafiltration systems are not standalone units, but integral components of the overall water treatment facility, providing a critical barrier between pre-treatment and advanced treatment stages.
This integrated design philosophy ensures that, when feed water quality fluctuates or abnormal conditions occur, the ultrafiltration system responds in a controlled, safe, and coordinated manner—protecting downstream processes and overall plant performance.
