Overview

The Ammonia Flaring System is designed to safely dispose of ammonia-containing gas streams generated during normal operations, start-up, shutdown, or emergency conditions in Oil & Gas and industrial facilities.
The system ensures controlled combustion, environmental compliance, and personnel safety, preventing the release of toxic ammonia to the atmosphere.

System Scope

Ammonia Flaring Systems are engineered as fully integrated safety packages and typically include the following main components:

  • Ammonia relief and collection headers
  • Knock-out drum or liquid separation system
  • Ammonia flare stack or enclosed flare
  • Burner and ignition system
  • Pilot burners and flame monitoring
  • Purge and assist gas systems
  • Pressure relief and isolation valves

Subsystems

Relief and Collection System

Engineering of relief headers and piping to safely collect ammonia-containing streams from multiple sources and route them to the flare system.

Engineering of knock-out drums to remove liquids and condensates upstream of the flare, protecting the flare tip and ensuring stable combustion.

Engineering of ammonia flare stacks or enclosed flares designed to ensure complete combustion of ammonia while minimizing emissions and thermal radiation.

Engineering of reliable ignition and pilot systems to guarantee immediate flare availability under all operating conditions.

Engineering of purge and assist gas systems to prevent air ingress, maintain flame stability, and support efficient combustion.

Engineering of instrumentation and flame detection systems to continuously monitor flare operation and ensure safe performance.

Engineering Approach

The engineering of ammonia flaring systems follows an integrated and safety-critical design approach, focused on safe disposal, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance. Engineering activities begin with the definition of the design basis, including ammonia concentration, relief flow rates, pressure, temperature, and applicable emission limits.
This approach ensures safe ammonia destruction, reliable operation, and environmental compliance.

System Integration

Ammonia Flaring Systems are not standalone units, but critical safety components integrated into the overall facility, designed to respond safely during normal, upset, and emergency conditions.
This integrated design philosophy ensures that, when hazardous ammonia release scenarios occur, the flaring system operates predictably and safely—protecting personnel, equipment, and the environment.
