Overview

The Deoiling System is designed to remove free and dispersed oil from produced water streams, ensuring safe, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation in Oil & Gas facilities.
The system conditions produced water to meet discharge, reuse, or reinjection requirements, protecting downstream equipment and minimizing environmental impact.

System Scope

Deoiling Systems are engineered as fully integrated packages and typically include the following main components:

  • Inlet manifold and isolation valves
  • Primary oil–water separation units
  • Hydrocyclones or compact deoiling devices
  • Coalescers and polishing units
  • Chemical injection systems (when required)
  • Produced water transfer pumps
  • Oil recovery and collection systems
  • Drain and sludge handling systems
  • Pressure, flow, and level instrumentation

Subsystems

Inlet Manifold and Isolation Valves

Engineering of inlet manifolds and isolation valves to collect and distribute produced water streams to downstream deoiling units, ensuring safe routing, isolation, and maintainability.

Engineering of primary separation equipment to remove free oil from produced water, reducing oil content and protecting downstream polishing stages.

Engineering of high-efficiency compact separation devices to remove dispersed oil droplets under variable flow and pressure conditions.

Engineering of coalescing and polishing systems to achieve low oil-in-water concentrations required for discharge or reinjection.

Engineering of chemical dosing systems to enhance separation efficiency and stabilize system performance when required.

Engineering of pumps and instrumentation to ensure controlled flow, stable operation, and continuous monitoring of system performance.

Engineering Approach

The engineering of deoiling systems follows an integrated and environmentally driven design approach, focused on safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. Engineering activities begin with the definition of the design basis, including produced water flow rate, oil concentration, droplet size distribution, pressure, temperature, and discharge or reinjection limits.
This approach ensures effective oil removal, stable operation, and long-term system reliability.

System Integration

Deoiling systems are not standalone units, but fully integrated components of the overall facility, designed to manage produced water safely under normal, upset, and emergency conditions.
The system is engineered to interface seamlessly with all major plant systems:

  • Production and separation systems, to treat produced water downstream of oil separation units
  • Water treatment and reinjection systems, to ensure water quality suitable for disposal or reinjection
  • Chemical dosing systems, to optimize separation efficiency and process stability

  • Transfer and pumping systems, to manage flow variations and transient conditions
  • Control systems, to enable real-time monitoring, alarms, and operator awareness
  • Mechanical systems, to guarantee integrity of vessels, piping, and internals under operating conditions

This integrated design philosophy ensures that, when operating conditions deteriorate or unexpected events occur, the deoiling system responds in a controlled, safe, and coordinated manner—protecting personnel, the environment, and overall plant integrity.
