Overview

The Oil Filtration System is designed to remove suspended solids, water, and contaminants from hydrocarbon liquids, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant operation in Oil & Gas applications.

System Scope

Oil filtration system are engineered as fully integrated packages and typically include the following main equipment:

  • Mechanical Cartridge Filters
  • Coalescing Filters
  • Oil–Water Separators (OWS)
  • Basket Filters / Strainers
  • Centrifugal Filtration Systems
  • Magnetic Filters
  • Adsorption / Clay Filtration Systems

Subsystems

Mechanical Cartridge Filters

Engineering of mechanical cartridge filters remove solid particles and fine contaminants from oil through replaceable filter elements, improving oil cleanliness and protecting downstream equipment.

Engineering of Coalescing filters designed to separate and remove free and dispersed water from oil by aggregating small droplets into larger ones for efficient separation.

Engineering of Oil–Water Separators remove free oil and suspended hydrocarbons from water streams, or conversely water from oil streams, ensuring compliance with environmental and process requirements.

Engineering of Basket filters and strainers provide coarse filtration, removing large solid debris to protect pumps, valves, and fine filtration stages.

Engineering of Centrifugal filtration systems use centrifugal force to separate solids and water from oil, offering continuous operation and high efficiency for heavy contamination conditions.

Engineering of Magnetic filters remove ferrous particles and metallic debris from oil, protecting sensitive equipment from wear and extending component lifetime.

Engineering of Adsorption and clay filtration systems remove oxidation by-products, acids, and color bodies from oil, restoring oil quality and extending fluid service life.

Engineering Approach

The engineering of oil filtration systems follows an integrated design approach focused on safety, reliability, and compliance with Oil & Gas standards. Activities start with the definition of the design basis and operating conditions, followed by detailed sizing and selection of all major components.

System Integration

Oil filtration systems are integrated with multiple plant systems to ensure oil quality, equipment protection, and operational continuity:

  • Upstream production and separation systems: Integration with separators and production manifolds to treat crude oil before stabilization, storage, or further processing.
  • Oil treatment systems (desalting / dehydration): Filtration upstream or downstream of desalters and dehydration units to improve efficiency and protect sensitive equipment.
  • Storage tank systems: Integration with crude oil or product storage tanks to maintain oil cleanliness during filling, circulation, and recirculation operations.

  • Transfer and pumping systems: Interface with transfer pumps and pipelines to protect pumps, valves, and pipelines from solids and water contamination.
  • Custody transfer and metering systems: Filtration upstream of metering skids to ensure accurate, reliable, and standards-compliant measurement.
  • Export and loading systems: Integration with pipeline export systems, truck loading, or marine terminals to meet contractual oil quality specifications.
  • Utilities and auxiliary systems: Integration with heating systems, drain and sludge handling systems, and utility services required for filtration operation.
